New Repair 100 year old whip handles

I was contacted some time ago by a gentleman from Toowoomba, QLD, asking if I could put whips onto a couple of handles

And of course I said yes. The handles he had were 100 years old and made by his grandfather.

Info from the owner Fred

The two handles were made by my grandfather Douglas Berge who lived in Guy Street, Warwick. He passed away in 1926.

The whips were given to my father Douglas Berge II who at the time was on a property in the Warwick District. When my father passed away some fifty years ago the handles came into my possession minus the whips.

Since then the handles have been in a box in the back shed, where I discovered them with all the family history a few months back. I decided to have whips made for the handles and found an article in the paper about a whip maker in Warwick, so I contacted him and on completion I will pass the whips on to my grandson.

And the finished whips.

World Domination

Warwick Whips products have expanded into yet another country.

I am very happy to say I have just sold a Hobble Belt to a very nice young lady from Namur, Belgium who is heading home in the coming weeks. She has been staying with relatives here in Warwick.

APWA Plaiting School Warwick

We had a great turn out for our plaiting school at Pringle Cottage in Warwick on the 15th April, and a big thank you to the Pringle Cottage ladies for the catering  We had our 8 students and as ususal we had fantastic support from other members of the association who came along to give a hand. In the end we had one member for each student. At the end of the day each student went home with a smile on the face and a whip made by them in their hand.

APWA Stanthorpe 2012

From Friday 6th through to Sunday 8th was our bi-annual gathering at Stanthorpe. We had our AGM with the election of a new committee and any other issue up for discussion. Throughout the weekend there were a number of demos and a plaiting competition. As I was only there for Saturday I was able to attend my first AGM and meet a lot of members who I have been wanting to talk to. I would like to thank the organisers for the work they put in as it was a great event.

United Kingdom Here We Come

I have just delivered a whip to a local lady who is sending a Warwick Whip over to the UK to her grandson who lives in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. She was telling me that her grandson was visiting her here in Warwick and was learning to crack a whip. He enjoyed it so much he wanted one for his birthday so let’s hope he enjoys it.

Santa Gertrudis Youth Camp

A small group of plaiters were asked by the Santa Gertrudis Breeders Association to attend their youth camp last week Thursday 12th January 2012. We were asked to demonstrate the art of whip plaiting. Throughout the morning we had 4 groups for about 1/2 hour and we ran them through the steps of making a whip. Once we showed them how a whip is made we involved them in having a go at plaiting and then cracking a whip, all of which was well recieved and enjoyed as evidenced by the questions asked by all of the kids.

There were 86 kids involved in the week-long camp (which is an annual event in Warwick) from as far away as Western Australia, and ranging in age from 7 to 17. All were involved with handling the cattle to grooming and judging.
